Abstract
Ethanol is added to a feed for ruminants to increase their nitrogen-retention ability. The feed may also contain a synthetic source of nitrogen, e.g. urea, phosphoric acid, ammonium, sodium or calcium phosphate, molasses and added vitamins. In an example, cattle were fed ground corn cobs, ground limestone, a supplement consisting of 80 parts molasses, 10 parts urea, 3 parts 75 per cent phosphoric acid 6 1/2 parts water and a mix containing ferrous, zinc, manganese, copper and cobalt sulphates, potassium iodide and vitamin A; 8 parts of 95 per cent ethanol was added to each 100 parts by weight of the supplement. In a further example, 150 lbs. of ammonia water containing 16 per cent nitrogen were mixed with 25 lbs. of 95 per cent ethanol; this supplement was incorporated into wet beet pulp for use as a feedstuff.
