Abstract

A process in which a hydrocarbon oil (e.g. mineral oil) is treated (e.g. decolorized or converted) by contacting it with granular solids (e.g. fuller's earth) within a confined contacting zone is characterized by passing a stream of liquid-solids slurry downwardly from the contacting zone through a confined drain passage, discharging the stream on to a perforated surface so that wet solids are retained on the surface around the lower end of the passage to form an accumulation having a defined liquid content which is a function of the liquid viscosity, the accumulation substantially impeding the the downward flow of the stream, and mechanically removing wet solids from the <PICT:0783569/III/1> <PICT:0783569/III/2> accumulation at a controlled rate to effect the desired rate of solids flow. The treatment plant is of the general type shown in Specification 711,487 and includes the apparatus described below for controlled withdrawal of solids interposed between the oil-treater and the solids-washer, and again between the solids-washer and the solids-drier. In Fig. 3 liquid-solids mixture issuing from the collector of the treater or from the foot of the washer (neither shown) emerges at 63 on to a rotating screen 57 where a pile 68 of solids formed by drainage through the screen checks downward flow through the pipe 63. The solids are carried round under a roller 69, Fig. 4, and are forced by a scraper 70 into a collecting box 23 for passage to the next stage of the process. The rate of solids withdrawal through pipe 63 is controlled by adjusting its distance from the screen 57 or by regulating the speed of rotation of the screen or both. A backwash pipe 65 is provided. In Fig. 7 the rotating screen is replaced by a travelling band screen 75 whose rate of travel may be varied. In both cases vacuum may be applied to the underside of the perforated surface. The screen may comprise 100-mesh stainless steel woven wire screening supported on a grating with 1-inch square openings and provided with drip points to facilitate draining. More than one pipe 63 may be used. In the drier (not shown), adsorbent is maintained as a fluidized bed by a condensable stripping gas and heat is supplied by indirect heat exchange. Vaporized stripping gas and solvent are passed to a quencher and there condensed by cold water while dried adsorbent is passed through a kiln, where impurities are burned off, back to the oiltreater.
