Abstract
783,225. Welding by pressure; rolling. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GES. Sept. 9, 1955 [Sept. 9, 1954], No. 25877/55. Class 83 (4). A welding installation for welding hot billets supplied from a reheating furnace to form a continuous bar for a continuous feed to the rolls of a roller mill, comprises at least two movable buttwelding machines, a feeding track along a line from the furnace towards the roller mill, a return track and a control arrangement for the machines such that one machine is stepped at the discharge point of the furnace to grip the trailing end of the preceding billet and the leading end of the following billet and is then caused to move towards the roller mill at a speed greater than the feeding speed to form a loop in the welded bar whilst the second or last machine is caused to return to the furnace. Three flash butt-welding machines 4, 5, 6 are mounted on wheeled carriages on an endless oval track 14 located between the reheating furnace 1 and feed devices 8, 9, a deburring device 10 with feeler rollers 13 being arranged between the feed means 8, 9. Feeler rollers 11, 12 in contact with a billet produce impulses to control the advance of the machines. Each machine comprises clamping-jaws 3, 15 and a pair of aligning jaws 18 adjacent each pair of clamping jaws, the clamping jaws operating after the aligning jaws. With the machines in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the machines 4, 5 are stationary, the machine 4 clamps the end of the welded bar 7 in its jaws 15 and the machine 6 releases the bar and travels along the track towards the furnace. While the machine 6 is moving, a billet is ejected from the furnace 1 until it contacts the end of the bar 7. The left-hand jaws 3 of the machine 4 clamp the billet and welding current is switched on. When a loop formed beyond the machine 5 in the previous operation has been straightened the machines 4, 5 are set in motion, the machine 5 at feeding speed and the machine 4 at twice this speed, thus forming a loop between the machines. When the billet end from the furnace passes the feeler 11 the speed of the machines 4, 5 is reduced and when it passes the feeler 12 the machines are stopped. The machine 6 has meanwhile reached the original position of machine 4 and grips the end of the bar 7 and the process is repeated. The track may be circular, rectangular or in two parallel tracks with automatic points at the ends.
