Abstract

Linear polyamides are made by continuously polymerizing an omega lactam or a low molecular weight polyamide derived therefrom, containing a dispersed inert pigment but devoid of any acid, base or salt with a dissociation constant greater than or equal to 15 X 10-6 in water at 25 DEG C., until the molten polyamide has a degree of polymerization of at least 10, adding a stabilizer to the melt and continuously heating until the desired degree of polymerization has been attained, the resultant polyamide being extruded. Specified lactams are 2-methyl cyclohexanone isoxime, 2-methyl cyclo-heptanone isoxime, 3-methyl cyclo-hexanone isoxime, cyclo-heptanone isoxime, cyclo-octanone isoxime, e -caprolactam, cyclo-pentadecanone isoxime or a -pyrrolidone. Specified stabilizers are organic acids and amines, e.g. acetic acid, stearic acid, isobutyl amine, hexamethylene diamine or e -N-benzoyl aminocaproic acid. Specified pigments are ultramarine, barium sulphate, lead chromate, titanium dioxide, carbon black or copper phthalo-cyanine. Dispersing agents, e.g. cetyl pyridinium bromide, ethylene oxide modified sorbitan mono-oleate, the reaction product of cetyl alcohol with ethylene oxide, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium pyrophosphate or ammonium oleate may also be present. In the examples: (1) a mixture of molten e -caprolactam, water and a dispersion of titanium dioxide in aqueous e -caprolactam containing a reaction product of cetyl alcohol and ethylene oxide is passed through a heated tube, acetic acid being injected as a stabilizer one-third down the tube; (2) aqueous e -caprolactam and an aqueous dispersion of titanium dioxide containing a reaction product of cetyl alcohol and ethylene oxide, are passed through a heated tube, aqueous e -caprolactam containing acetic acid being injected one-third down the tube, the resultant products being spun into filaments.
