782,384. Substation equipment. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Feb. 24, 1956 [March 11, 1955], No. 5845/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (4). In a phonographic call-answering apparatus, the arrival of an incoming call starts the driving means for the record carrier which after a predetermined interval operates switch means which in turn places the driving means, after a further predetermined interval, under the control of a device which stops the driving means when the calling party is disconnected. In the embodiment described, ringing current brings about in known fashion the operation, after a delay while the resistance of a thermistor is sufficiently decreased, of a relay which starts the movement of the record carrier and pick-up. These, after a predetermined time, operate switches which bring up a second relay. This connects across the line both the pick-up, to send the recorded message to the calling party, and a third relay, causing the line connections. to be transferred at the exchange from ringing battery to talking battery. The second relay also causes the operation, after a delay while a condenser is charged, of a fourth relay which places the holding circuit of the first relay, and hence the driving means, under the control of the third relay, which holds in the line loop. The delay in the transfer of control prevents the premature release of the apparatus by a possible momentary relapse of the third relay when ringing battery is replaced by talking battery.
