Abstract

782,283. Pulse and sawtooth generating circuits. EBAUCHES SOC. ANON. Jan. 21, 1955 [Jan. 22, 1954; Jan. 6, 1955], No. 1847/55. Class 40 (6). In an electronic pulse generator for producing steep-sided pulses the positive-going edges are obtained by a coupling between the control grid and auxiliary cathode of a secondary-emission discharge tube. Fig. 1 shows a pulse generator comprising a secondary-emission tube T1, the auxiliary cathode K2 of which is coupled to the control grid g1 via capacitor C, the tube being initially cut off by returning its cathode K1 to a positive potential. When the tube is rendered conducting, for example by raising the cathode potential, current flows from the auxiliary cathode K2 so that its potential rises rapidly, this rise is transmitted via capacitor C to the control grid g1 the action being cumulative so that a positive-going voltage step is produced at cathode K1, Fig. 2 (not shown), until the back E.M.F. generated across inductor L causes a drop in potential at auxiliary cathode K2 and thus at control grid g1 so that the tube is cut-off and the voltage at the cathode K1 rapidly falls. The fall in voltage at grid g1 is limited by catcher diode D and the amplitude of the output at auxiliary-cathode K2 is limited by resistor R. In a modification shown in Fig. 3 a pentode T2, operating as a constant current device, constitutes the cathode load for secondary-emission tube T1 so that a sawtooth voltage, Fig. 4 (not shown), is generated at the cathode K1. The anode current of tube T2 may be suppressed during the positive pulse front on cathode K1 by a coupling between the control grid g1 of tube T2 and the anode of tube T1. The circuit may be synchronized by applying a control voltage to tube T2 at point Vg or the circuit may function as a frequency-divider, Fig. 6 (not shown.). In a modification shown in Fig. 8 the auxiliary cathode K2 and the control grids of tubes T1 and T2 are tapped on to a potential divider connected across the H.T. supply and a capacitor Cc is periodically charged through an impedance Z by the voltage rise at cathode K1 and discharged through tube T2 output pulses are obtained at lead S after passing filter C1, C2, L, Ra. Positive synchronizing pulses are applied to the control grid g1 of pentode T2 and the oscillating frequency of the circuit may be controlled by varying the resistor Rk or capacitor Cc so that by adjustment of Rk the tube T1 will conduct after n control pulses so that a frequency division of n is obtained. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the suppressor grid of the secondary-emission tube is connected to the potential divider a few volts above its control grid and the auxiliary cathode is connected to a point such that most rapid reaction is obtained.
