Abstract

Silicon compounds having at least one hydrogen atom attached directly to silicon are prepared by reacting alkyl-aluminium hydrides with a halogenide or complex fluoride or alkoxy compound of silicon or with a silicon compound containing halogen or alkoxy groups in addition to one or more Si-C bonds. Specified aluminium compounds are diethyl- and diisobutylaluminium hydrides. The reaction may be conducted in the presence or absence of solvents, suspension media or diluents. Temperatures up to 250 DEG C. are usually employed. In the examples: (1) SiF4 is compressed with diethylaluminium hydride (containing 20 per cent triethyl aluminium) in a pressure vessel and heated to 260 DEG C. On distilling, three fractions are produced:-(a) SiH3.C2H5-SiF3C2H5 mixture; (b) <FORM:0781533/IV (a)/1> mixture; and (c) SiH(C2H5)3-SiF(C2H5)3 mixture, the residue being silicon tetraethyl; (2) triethyl fluorosilane is added to diethyl- or di-isobutyl-aluminium hydride to yield triethylsilane; (3) dimethyl dichlorosilane and diethyl aluminium hydride yield dimethyl silane, and similar reactions result from the use of dimethyl- or diethyldiethoxy silanes.
