Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises an admixture of a low molecular weight distillable perhalogenated olefinic polymer which is a liquid, grease, or wax, and a minor proportion of a siliceous material as a gelling agent. The polymer may be a chain-terminated polymer, i.e. a telomer, or a normally solid polymer cracked at elevated temperature. The polymer may be a homopolymer of trifluorochlorethylene, dichlorodifluoroethylene, perfluorobutadiene, perfluoracrylonitrile, or perfluorocyclobutene, or a copolymer of one or more of the perhalomonomers with vinyl chloride, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride, or vinylidene chloride. The siliceous material may be calcium silicate, hydrated silica, hydrous alumina silicate, hydrous magnesium silicate, siliceous clays such as attapulgite, montmorillonite, or bentonite, decyl ammonium bentonite, dioctadecyl ammonium bentonite, dimethyldioctadecyl ammonium bentonite, diethyldioctadecyl ammonium bentonite, or an estersil made by reacting silicic acid with an alcohol such as ethyl to n-dodecyl, isobutyl, isoamyl, isopropyl, or sec.-butyl alcohol, cyclopentanol, or cyclohexanol. The composition may also include other lubricating additives such as molybdenum sulphide, or graphite, and surface-active agents such as the reaction product of ammonia or amines with epichlorohydrin, or with neutral esters of metaphosphoric acid. The composition may be made by blending the ingredients in the presence of a volatile dispersing aid, such as acetone, methyl-isobutyl ketone, methyl ethyl ketone, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, or ethyl phosphate, which quickly evaporates from the composition. Specification 761,053, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.ALSO:A composition comprises an admixture of a low molecular weight distillable perhalogenated olefinic polymer, i.e. a liquid, grease, or wax, and a minor proportion of a siliceous material as a gelling agent. The polymer may be a homopolymer of trifluorochloroethylene, dichlorodifluoroethylene, perfluorobutadiene, perfluoroacrylonitrile, or perfluorocyclobutene or a copolymer of one or more of the perhalomonomers with vinyl chloride, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride, or vinylidene chloride. The low molecular weight polymers may be a chain-terminated polymer, i.e. a telomer, or a normally solid polymer cracked at elevated temperature. The siliceous material may be calcium silicate, hydrated silica, hydrous alumina silicate, hydrous magnesium silicate, siliceous clays such as attapulgite, montmorillonite, or bentonite, decyl ammonium bentonite, dioctadecyl ammonium bentonite, dimethyldioctadecyl ammonium bentonite, or an estersil made by reacting siliceous acid with an alcohol such as ethyl to n-dodecyl, isobutyl, isoamyl, isopropyl, sec.-butyl, cyclopentanol or cyclohexanol. The composition may also include lubricating additives such as molybdenum sulphide, or graphite, and surface-active agents such as the reaction product of ammonia or amines with epichlorohydrin, or neutral esters of metaphosphoric acid.
