Abstract

781,046. Moulding dummy cigarettes for test purposes. MORRIS, J. E., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Jan. 12, 1955 [Jan. 13, 1954], No. 995/54. Class 87(2). A standard mass, for use in the measurement of the density of cigarettes in cigarette-making machines by beta-ray absorption, is made by subjecting a cellular thermoplastic resin, e.g. expanded polystyrene to heat and pressure to raise its density to the required standard. In one method of moulding the mass it is first shaped to the diameter of the finished rod and then brought to the required density by heat and pressure. In another method the material is compressed to the correct density and then cut to the required shape. In examples (1) a rod of expanded cellular material is placed in a tubular mould of the same diameter, metal plugs being inserted at each end and screw-pressed inwards while the mould is heated until the required density is reached ; (2) a mould 1 is used consisting of a metal channel 2 with removable ends 3 and having a block 4 which is a sliding fit in the channel 2 and which can be forced down to a fixed distance from the base of the channel by screws 5, pieces 6 determining this distance. A piece 10 of expanded cellular polystyrene is first cut to a specified shape and then placed in the mould 1 whereupon the material is heated to 50‹C. for 20-30 minutes. The screws 5 are then operated to bring the material to the required density and the finished block removed and ultimately machined to the shape of a cigarette rod.
