Abstract

Hydrocarbons are obtained by the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide wherein a synthesis gas containing carbon monoxide is passed upwardly through a liquid medium having an iron catalyst in suspension in which the temperature in the catalyst suspension increases in the upward direction from 30 DEG to 150 DEG C., the temperature in the gas inlet zone being such that no synthesis occurs in that zone. The catalyst is preferably obtained by precipitating an iron nitrate solution containing a small amount of copper, with ammonium hydroxide and then adding a small quantity of potassium carbonate, drying and grinding with slack wax. In an example, 4.5 kgs. of the catalyst was charged into a tube 5 metres long and of 50 mms. diameter, the tube being jacketed over its entire length. The lowermost 90 c.cs. were not heated and the remainder was heated with 2 separate heating jackets so that at the gas inlet position the temperature of the catalyst suspension was 60-70 DEG C. lower than the temperature at the gas outlet position. After the catalyst had attained a temperature of 215 DEG C. at the gas inlet the reactor was switched over to a synthesis gas of 2 parts hydrogen to 3 parts of CO. After a CO conversion of 90 per cent the temperature was slowly reduced to 200 DEG C. at the inlet. By the process the efficiency of the catalyst was approximately doubled. Specification 752,465 is referred to.
