Abstract

Permanent-wave hair preparations include a higher molecular weight, branched-chain, primary aliphatic monohydric alcohol, containing at least ten carbon atoms per molecule, or a mixture of such alcohols. Examples are 2-butyloctanol, 2-hexyldecanol, 2-octyldodecanol, 2 - decyldodecanol and 2 - hexyloctadecanol. The proportion used, especially in the fixing solutions, is 0.5 to 10 per cent.ALSO:A soap composition or shampoo includes a higher molecular weight, branched - chain, primary aliphatic monohydric alcohol, containing at least ten carbon atoms per molecule, or a mixture of such alcohols. Examples are 2 - butyloctanol, 2 - hexyldecanol, 2 - octyldecanol, 2 - decyldodecanol and 2 - hexyloctadecanol. In general, proportions of 1-20 per cent are used.ALSO:A cosmetic preparation, a deodorant, an insect-repellant or a soap includes a higher molecular weight, branched-chain, primary aliphatic monohydric alcohol, or a mixture of such alcohols. Cosmetic preparation means a lotion, ointment or powder for application to the skin or hair to improve their appearance and includes shampoos, hair oils, fixatives and dyes, depilatories, skin creams and lotions. Higher molecular weight means containing at least ten carbon atoms per molecule and examples of the alcohols are 2-butyloctanol, 2-hexyldecanol, 2-octyldodecanol, 2-decyldodecanol, 2-hexyloctadecanol. They may be prepared by condensation in the presence of alkali according to Guerbet or by converting higher molecular weight olefin polymers by oxosynthesis. In general, amounts of 0.5 to 35 per cent by weight are included. In examples giving proportions by weight, a liquid skin cream contains paraffin oil 10; 2-hexyldecanol 10; triethanolamine stearate 10; perfume 1; distilled water 69; a fatty skin cream contains a mixture of fatty alcohols mixed with sodium alkyl sulphate 14; 2-decyldodecanol 7; glycerine 7; distilled water 72; a skin oil contains paraffin oil 10; almond oil 20; 2-butyloctadecanol 69; perfume 1; a powder contains talcum 50; kaolin 40; magnesium stearate 5; zinc oxide 1; 2-decyldodecanol 4; a hair oil contains 2-hexyldecanol 50; paraffin oil 50; isopropyl alcohol 20; perfume 0.5.
