Abstract

780,391. Storage tubes. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. July 12, 1955, No. 20169/55. Class 39(1). A direct viewing storage tube has a positiveion repelling grid between the flooding electron source and the collector grid. The storage assembly comprises a metal ring 130 supporting an electroformed nickel screen 132 having a coating 134 of dielectric material e.g. talc, on one side, applied by spraying whilst air is forced through the interstices. On the other side is sprayed a thin layer of metal 136. The collector electrode 138 held in a bent-over annular electrode 140 is disposed in contact with the dielectric coating 134, the meshes of the screen 142 being at an angle to the meshes of the screen 132 to minimize the moire effect. The ion grid 22 extends across the storage assembly and is a stocking knit tungsten screen held tautly across a metal ring 150 which is welded to an annular electrode 154, the whole assembly being supported on insulating rods 156, 158. The ion repeller grid has a potential positive to the collector electrode and eliminates ions formed by the flood gun electrons on the residual gases of the tube. It behaves also as a shield eliminating potential variations within the tube and may function as an auxiliary collector grid during erasure. In operation a scanning gun lays down a charge pattern, the elemental areas being charged by the beam of a flood gun to an upper or lower value of charge which influences the passage of flood electrons to the viewing screen. The charge is erased by raising the potential of the collector grid. Specification 758,677 is referred to.
