Abstract

Fast dyeings and prints on synthetic textile fibres, e.g fibres of acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, and vinylidene cyanide polymers and copolymers, polyethylene, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyester-polyamides, cellulose esters and ethers, corn protein formaldehyde polymers and mineral and alginate fibres, with any colouring matter such as vat and mordant-acid dyestuffs, lakes, inks, pigments but especially direct, acid and acetate dyestuffs, are obtained by first impregnating the fibres with an aqueous medium containing a polyepoxide and an amine catalyst and then heating, e.g. at 100-200 DEG C., to cure the polyepoxide. In the case of prints, the fibres may be printed with the aqueous medium and then dyed. The polyepoxides may be saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic and may be substituted with, for example, hydroxyl or ether groups or halogen atoms. They may also be monomeric or polymeric and numerous examples are given, the preferred epoxides being the glycidyl polyethers of the dihydric phenols. The amine catalyst may be any monomeric or polymeric compound containing at least one amino group, preferably a primary amino group, and many examples are given. When necessary the aqueous medium may contain emulsifying agents, organic solvents, plasticisers and softening agents, many examples of which are specified. Examples describe the dyeing of polyacrylonitrile, polyester, polyamide, polyvinylidene cyanide, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, cellulose acetate and zein fibres. Specification 675,180, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.ALSO:Synthetic fibres are impregnated with an aqueous medium containing a polyepoxide and an amine catalyst and then heated, e.g. at 100-200 DEG C., to cure the polyepoxide, whereby their dye affinity is improved (see Group IV (e)). The polyepoxides may be saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic and may be substituted with, for example, hydroxyl or ether groups or halogen atoms. They may also be monomeric or polymeric and numerous examples are given, the preferred polyepoxides being the glycidyl polyethers of the dihydric phenols. Suitable amine catalysts are ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, dicyandiamide, melamine, pyridine, cyclohexylamine, benzyldimethylamine, benzylamine, diethylanilines, triethanolamine, piperidine, tetramethyl piperazine, N,N-dibutyl-1,3-propane diamine, N,N - diethyl - 1,3 - propane diamine, 1,2 - diamino - 2 - methylpropane, 2,3 - diamino - 2 - methylbutane, 2,4 - diamino - 2-methylpentane, 2,7 - diamino - 2,6 - dimethyloctane, dibutylamine, dioctylamine, dinonylamine, distearylamine, diallylamine, dioleylamine, dicyclohexylamine, methylethylamine, ethylcyclohexylamine, o - tolylnaphthylamine, pyrrolidine, 2 - methyl - pyrrolidine, tetrahydropyridine, 2 - methylpiperidine, 2,6-dimethylpiperidine, diaminopyridine, tetraethylene pentamine and m-phenylene diamine. When necessary, the aqueous medium may contain emulsifying agents, organic solvents, plasticizers and softening agents, many examples of which are specified. Specification 675,180 is referred to.
