Abstract

779,933. Coaster hubs. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1955 [Sept. 1, 1954], No. 23465/55. Class 136(2). [Also in Group XXIV] A two speed coaster hub includes primary means for rotating a hub from a driving member through a primary clutch which is engaged by forward rotation of the driving member and secondary means for rotating the hub from the driving member through a speed reducing gearing and a secondary self tightening clutch, there being provided means to limit the torque capacity of the primary clutch and means responsive to slippage of the primary clutch for causing engagement of the secondary clutch. A driving member 14 with a sprocket 15 has internal teeth 26 meshing planet gears 23 engaging a sun gear 22 rigid with a member 18 fixed on the stationary axle 1. A low speed clutch member 37 is threaded on a screw shaft 12 fixed to the planet carrier and a high speed clutch member 29 is threaded on a screwed sleeve 16 fixed to the driving member 14. Conical clutch faces 31, 38 on the clutch members 29, 37, co-operate with corresponding faces 32, 39 on a sleeve 33 slidably splined to the wheel hub 9. Normally, rotation of the driving member 14 screws the clutch member 29 to the left against an abutment 35 to engage the clutch faces 31, 32, to drive the hub 9 in top gear. The pressure between the clutch faces is determined by a spring 34. Should the clutch slip to an extent that the screw shaft 12 rotates faster than the hub then the clutch member 37 screws to the left to engage clutch faces 38, 39 and move the sleeve 33 to the left to fully compress the spring 34 and disengage the clutch 31, 32. The drive is then in low gear. When the resistance torque is reduced the drive passes automatically again into top gear. The clutch members 29, 37 are frictionally engaged by drag members 41, 42 to enable them to function properly. If the driving member is rotated backwardly the clutch member 37 moves to the right to force a member 6 towards a fixed member 2 to which it is splined so that brake blocks 8 are forced radially outwards to bear against the inside of the hub 9. In a modification means are provided for adjusting the initial pressure of the spring 34 to regulate the torque required to cause the device to shift down to low gear.
