A trap for ensnaring animals in burrows comprises a cage having one open end and containing the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 2. The wire 1a defines the opening of the cage and hingedly supports a trap door 3 which is held in its open position by means of a catch 8 at one end of a rod 7 extending along the top of the cage, the catch engaging a hole in the trap door. The other end of the rod 7 is formed into a loop 9 through which is threaded one arm of a releasing device 10 hinged on the wire 16 of the cage. The releasing device, on being touched by an animal in the cage, is raised slightly and causes the rod 7 to rotate in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow f, whereupon the catch is disengaged from the trap door and the door drops to its closed position. When the trap is transported by means of the handle 12, the rod 7 and the releasing device 10 may be locked in position at the top of the cage by means of a spring 16 threaded on the rod and terminating at one end in a hooked lever 16b and at the other in a hook 16a. The locking is effected by rotating the spring on the rod until the lever 16b engages a hook 17 formed on the cage, and the hook 16a engages the catch 8. Bait may be placed in the burrow beyond the releasing device 10 as shown in Fig. 5, or a bait holder may be incorporated in the trap. Means in the form of a closed passageway inside the cage may be provided for ensuring that the animal backs on to the releasing device.
