Abstract
Plastic compositions comprising cellulose acetate of acetyl value (as combined acetic acid) at least 57 per cent and an intrinsic viscosity of at least 1.6, and a plasticizer of low solvent power for the cellulose acetate in intimate fusion therewith, are prepared by heating an intimate mixture of the cellulose acetate and the plasticizer in particulate form with mastication to a temperature sufficiently high to cause the mixture to fuse and form a homogeneous melt, which is then cooled to room temperature. The term /aintrinsic viscosity/e is defined. A plasticizer of low solvent power is defined as one which forms a homogeneous melt when heated with the cellulose acetate flake in the proportion 7/3 at 450 DEG F., but separates from the cellulose acetate on cooling the melt to room temperature. The plasticizer may be dibutyl, di-isobutyl or butyl benzyl phthalate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate, diethylene glycol dibenzoate, the adduct of equimolar proportions of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol, or diethyl phthalate used with triphenyl phosphate in 1 : 1 ratio, di-isobutyl phthalate being preferred. The acetyl value of the cellulose acetate is preferably 58-60 and its intrinsic viscosity is preferably 1.7-1.9. The composition may contain a stabilizer, such as an epoxy-type compound obtained by condensation of an epihalohydrin with a polyhydric phenol or an organic polyglycidyl compound prepared by the polymerization or condensation of glycidol. In an example, 100 parts of cellulose acetate of acetyl value 58.4-59.6 and intrinsic viscosity 1.7 to 1.8 are mixed with 30 parts of di-isobutyl phthalate and 0.2 part of a polymeric condensation product of epichlorhydrin and bisphenol as stabilizer, dried at 160 DEG F., extrusion compounded at 430-600 DEG F., and reduced to moulding powder in known manner. Shaped articles moulded from compositions of the invention have improved toughness and dimensional stability.
