Abstract
Synthetic anion exchange resins are made by reacting a phenol with a slight theoretical excess of formaldehyde to form a trimethylol phenol which is then condensed with a phenol and an alkylene polyamine and/or polyethylene imine. The resin may be further condensed with an aliphatic compound containing the grouping CH.CH2 halogen and either a further halogen atom or an epoxy group, e.g. epichlorohydrin, dichlorohydrin, dibromohydrin, dichloroethyl ether, dibromoethyl ether, ethylene chloride or ethylene bromide. Specified phenols are phenol and m-cresol. Specified alkylene polyamines are ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine and tetraethylene pentamine. Preferably, 1 mol. of the phenol is reacted with from 3.5 to 4.5 mols. of formaldehyde in strongly alkaline aqueous solution, 1 to 5 mols. of polyethylene imine or one of the polyamines then being added. In the examples, ion exchange resins are made by reacting (1) phenol, formaldehyde and tetraethylene pentamine; (2) phenol, formaldehyde and ethylene diamine; (3) phenol, formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde and tetraethylene pentamine, the resultant gels being swelled with sulphuric acid, regenerated with caustic soda solution and, in Example (1), modified by reaction with ethylene chloride.
