Class 117 [Also in Group XII] In a method and apparatus for removing foreign substances and undesired lumps from a granular material, the material is supplied through an inlet 8, Fig. 1, to a tank 1 and is fluidized by compressed air flowing upwardly from inclined porous walls 5, 6. The lumps &c. pass downwardly through an outlet chamber 14 whilst the rest of the material flows downwardly on one side of a partition 16 containing an air opening 17, and then upwardly on the other side of the partition to an outlet 9. Air is fed through separate valves to separate chambers 10 at different rates and leaves the tank from an outlet 13. In Fig. 5 three partitions 16, 20 are provided so that the material moves in a sinuous path through the tank, and instead of feeding fluidizing air to separate chambers, one chamber 10 extends below and along the length of one porous wall 5 which has a varying porosity. The larger particles are withdrawn from a chamber 14 by a worm conveyer. A number of tanks may be arranged in series. Fig. 6, with the outlet of one tank serving as the inlet of an adjacent tank. Each tank has two partitions 16 between which there is no material flow although the material between the partitions is traversed by fluidizing air. In a further embodiment a tank is arranged between a rotary kiln used in the manufacture of aluminium oxide and a fluid bed cooler, and a porous bottom wall 37, Fig. 13, of the tank, has a V-shaped cross-section, and a rod 60 lies in the apex of the V and is vibrated by a device 61 to agitate the material lying near it.
