Abstract

777,949. Adhesive tapes ; bandages, &c. SMITH & NEPHEW, Ltd., T. J. Feb. 28, 1955 [Feb. 26, 1954], No. 5749/54. Class 140. In the production of an adhesive tape, bandage or the like by transferring an adhesive layer from a temporary support consisting of a roller, belt or the like to a backing of permeable or impermeable material, the surface of the temporary support is pretreated with an hydrophilic release agent before applying the adhesive, and release agent remaining adhering' to the adhesive after the transfer process is removed therefrom, e.g. by washing with water. The temporary support may have a plain or intaglio pattern surface so as to produce a continuous or discontinuous layer of adhesive. It may be of synthetic resin, glass, metal or porous ceramic..The release agent may be an ethanol solution of a polyethylene glycol wax, and may even be water where the surface of the temporary support is porous. The backing material may be the microporous polyvinyl film known as " Porvic " (Registered Trade Mark). The backing may be pretreated with the solvent of the adhesive to ensure better adhesion. As shown, a rotating metallic drum, the surface of which has an intaglio pattern dips into a bath 11 of water soluble wax release agent. The surface turns past a doctor blade 12 and is cooled in zone 14 by a current of cold air, a layer 31 (Fig. 4) of release agent thereby being formed. A layer 32 of adhesive is then applied from hopper 16 and excess is removed by doctor blade 17. The coated surface is warmed in zone 21 by a current of warm air and then brought in contact with the backing material 19 which is passed over a roller 20 whereby the adhesive is transferred to the backing material. The coated backing material is passed to a water washing stage 24 to remove release agent transferred with the adhesive and finally to a hot drying zone (not shown).
