Abstract
777,657. Variable high-frequency attenuators. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 18, 1955 [July 20, 1954], No. 20711/55. Class 40 (8). A variable push-button attenuator for frequencies within the megacycle range comprises a number of attenuator sections each associated with a switch, the switches being in the form of displaceable links which form parts of the inner conductor of a coaxial line having a characteristic impedance equal to the input and output impedance of the sections. The sections are separated by screening boxes 35 and each consists of two series resistors 1, 3 and a shunt resistor 5 the output line 31 being connected between the free terminal of the last series resistor 3 and the earthy end of the last shunt resistor 5. The parasitic inductance L1 of the resistors '1, 3 may be compensated by shunt capacitors 29 of value C 2 given by: The sections are connected in series by movable bridges 7, Fig. 4 (a rear view), which provide conductive paths between the terminals 53 of resistors 1, 3 in adjacent sections. The bridges 7 are mounted on insulating push rods 15. Each resistor 1 is provided with a contact 25 extending through the outer conductor 27 of a coaxial line to which an input line 33 is connected. The inner conductor of the coaxial line is of square section and comprises fixed portions 9 and movable L-shaped portions 11 mounted on the ends of axially movable insulating rods 41. These rods are resiliently coupled to the push rods 15 by forks 43 mounted between helical springs 45, 47. Depression of a push rod 15 breaks the coaxial line and connects the righthand (input) portion of the line to the resistor 1 of an attenuator section. At the same time, displacement of the corresponding bridge 7 breaks the connection between the resistor 1 and the resistor 3 in the adjacent section leaving in circuit the sections which lie between the displaced bridge and the output 31. Another arrangement is described in which the input and output are arranged at opposite ends of the apparatus. Specification 644,066 is referred to.
