Abstract
777,418. Jet propelled aircraft. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 8, 1955 [Nov. 17, 1954], No. 31878/55. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A thrust reversing device disposed in the exhaust outlet of a jet propulsion engine comprises a centrally disposed movable body portion to which a plurality of elongated leaves are hingeably connected, means for moving said body portion fore-and-aft, and means for moving said leaves between a retracted and an open position. In Fig. 2, the body portion 20 is movable fore-and-aft by a piston 27 sliding in a cylinder 28 formed in a main body portion 29 secured to the engine casing by struts 18a. Pressure and return conduits 31, 32 lead to cylinder 28. The portion 20 is formed with bores 34 receiving guide rods 33, and with a cylinder 24 fed by pressure and return conduits 25, 26 controlling a piston 22, the piston rod of which is connected by rods 23, working in slots 20b in the body, to leaves 19 and 19a, pivoted to the body at 21 and 21a. These leaves form an inner and an outer set, Fig. 5, arranged so that in the retracted position of Fig. 2, the outer leaves 19 form a smooth continuation of the fairing of the main body portion 29, totally enclosing the inner leaves, and in the open position of Figs. 4 and 5 the leaves 19 and 19a just overlap. In operation, the movable body portion 20 is moved to the right by piston 27, and the leaves are then opened by piston 22, reversing the thrust. The body portion 20 is then moved back to the left, giving the final position of Fig. 4.
