Abstract

777,080. Blind-riveting mandrels. AVIATION DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1955 [Feb. 16, 1954], No. 4717/55. Class 83 (4). A mandrel for blind riveting comprises a stem 4 of a diameter to pass freely through the bore of a tubular rivet 1, an enlarged head portion at one end of said stem formed of a frusto-conical section 8 which increases in diameter from the diameter of said stem to a diameter larger than the bore of said rivet, and an annular flange 7 extending outwardly from the large end of said frusto-conical section and having a thickness axially of said stem sufficiently small to cause shearing of said flange from said frusto-conical section before breakage of said stem. In operation, retraction of the mandrel spreads the rivet tail 6 and clenches the plates tightly together. After failure of the flange 7 in shear the conical portion 8 expands the rivet stem to fill the holes in the plates and also broaches the bore of the rivet to facilitate the insertion of a sealing member.
