Abstract
2 - Methylcyclopentane - 1,3 - dione is prepared by reacting 3-methylcyclopentane-1,2,4-trione with a compound of the formula RNHNH2, wherein R represents hydrogen or one of the groups -CONH2 or -CSNH2, decomposing the resulting product of the formula: <FORM:0776920/IV(b)/1> wherein R has the above significance, by heating in a solution of caustic alkali in a solvent having a boiling point of at least 170 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, and acidifying the alkali metal salt of the formula: <FORM:0776920/IV(b)/2> wherein M represents an alkali metal. The reactant of the formula RNHNH2 may be hydrazine which is used preferably in the form of its hydrate, or semicarbazide or thiosemicarbazide either of which is used preferably in the form of a salt, e.g. the hydrochloride salt. The solvent used in the above reaction may be a dihydric alcohol, e.g. ethylene glycol, a propanediol or a butanediol. The caustic alkali may be potassium hydroxide. The above process may be modified in that a mixture of the trione reactant, the compound of the formula RNHNH2, caustic alkali and the solvent is heated to form the alkali metal salt of the above formula, or a solution in one of the solvents of the reaction product of the trione reactant and hydrazine hydrate containing caustic alkali is added to a solution in one of the solvents of caustic alkali maintained at or near the boiling point, to form the alkali metal salt of the above formula, or semicarbazide hydrochloride is reacted in the cold with the trione to form the corresponding 1-monosemicarbazone derivative of the trione which is isolated and heated with a caustic alkali in one of the solvents at or near the boiling point to form the alkali metal salt of the above formula. A number of detailed examples are given.
