Abstract
775,522. Sheathed heating resistances. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 7, 1955 [July 7, 1954], No. 19691/55. Class 39(3) In a resistance heater of the tubular sheathed type having a heating resistance embedded in a mass of heat conducting and electrically insulating material, e.g. magnesium oxide or aluminium oxide or alumina or magnesia cement enclosed by an outer sheath usually metallic, the heating resistance 8 has a hollow core space therein and comprises a metal tube in a straight, helical or serpentine length and with a circular, elliptical, rectangular, triangular or other annular crosssection. The core space 5 of the tubular resistance 8 is preferably filled with an insulating material, e.g. magnesium oxide, which is preferably compacted into a dense mass by rolling or swagging prior to shaping the resistance 8. Insulating material 6 is loaded in pulverulent or granular form into the metal sheath 10 to embed the resistance 8, and is densely compacted, preferably by elongating and reducing the diameter of the sheath by swaging or rolling. When the material 6 is a magnesia or alumina cement, compacting is not necessary. The sheath 10 carries a terminal at each end.
