In a mowing machine, of the kind wherein a mower-bar 24 projects transversely from a head 25 carried by a vehicle, the cutter 59 is reciprocated by a rocker-arm 42, articulated to it at one end 46 and pivoted on a part fixed to the head at the other, the rocker being connected intermediately by a connecting rod 39 to a crank pin 37 on a power-driven shaft. The device is carried by the tractor-mounted structure described in Specification 775,446 which comprises a frame 12 carrying a longitudinal tube 11 housing a driving shaft 13 and a transverse tubular beam 10 the outer end of which receives a stub-shaft 23 forming part of the cutter-head. The shaft 23 is fixed to a vertical member 29 to which is attached a carrier 28 capable of swinging rearwardly about a vertical axis if the mower encounters obstructions, a spring- loaded latch 31, 33, being provided to hold the parts normally in engagement. The head includes a horizontal tube 27 through which passes the crank-shaft, driven by a pulley 35, from a pulley 14 on the shaft 11. The crank-pin 37 is connected to the rocker 42 by a link 39 comprising spaced bars embracing the pin 37 and a pin 41 on the rocker. The rocker is pivoted at 44 on a part fixed to the head and at its lower end to a pin 46 on the cutter 59, the lower connection including a vertical slot to accommodate the respective arcuate and linear movements of the rocker and cutter. The cutter head carries a wheel 55. The mower-bar is raisable about the axis of the crank shaft through a cable 49 passing to a hand-winch or power-ram on the tractor, a further cable 53 and spring 57 being provided to support the mower resiliently. The beam 10 is raisable about the shaft 11 through a hydraulic-ram 15 and anchored cable 19.
