Abstract

[Also in Groups XIII and XXIV] In an engine liquid-cooling system in which a fluid-pressure operated clutch 1, Fig. 1, in the drive to a radiator fan 7 is engaged and disengaged under the control of a thermostatically-operated fluid-pressure valve 36 as the coolant temperature respectively rises above and falls below a predetermined value, the valve 36 controls a fluid-pressure motor 42 actuating radiator shutters 40 to open and close them when the clutch is respectively engaged and disengaged. The clutch comprises a driven presser plate 16, Fig. 2, slidably splined on a fan shaft extension 6 and co-acting piston-wise with a floating casing 11 to enclose a space 20 containing a clutch-release spring 24 and a driving clutch plate 21 splined on a shaft 5 connected to the engine crank-shaft directly or via a transmission. The clutch is engaged either by vacuum supplied from the valve 36 to the space 20 via passages 32, 29, 28, 27, the main clutch casing 3 being permanently vented, or, as shown, by compressed air or hydraulic pressure supplied from the valve 36 to the main clutch casing 3 via the pipe 35 and port 34, the space 20 being then permanently vented by the aforesaid passages. Radial grooves 39 assist clutch disengagement.
