Abstract
774,299. Cleaning tubes. SMITH, W. H. May 20, 1955 [May 20, 1954], No. 14874/54. Class 99(2) Spiral guide elements 2 loosely mounted in vertical tubes 1 for the passage of combustion gases in a boiler are raised and lowered with a jolting movement to clean the tubes. The elements 2 are provided with mushroom shaped heads 5 engaged on the underside by arms 8 of bell-crank levers 9 actuated by pins 11 on a sliding member 10 reciprocated by a cam 18 engaging a pin 17 thereon. The cam 18 is rotated by an electric motor controlled by a timing mechanism which causes the motor to operate for a predetermined period after the fan supplying forced air to the boiler has run for a predetermined time. The cam 18 moves the member 10 to the right and then releases it to allow the elements 2 to fall quickly under their own weight. The arms 8 contact the heads 5 off-centre and produce slight rotation of the elements 2 when they are lifted. The member 10 may be reciprocated manually by a lever 23 engaging a projection 14 and the motor may also drive a declinkering mechanism. The main flue passage may be connected to the ash pit by a valve on to which the ash from the elemerits 2 falls, the valve being opened at intervals by means controlled by the time for which the air fan has been in operation. In-a modification the member 10 is replaced by a chain carrying a projecting pin which operates each lever 9 in succession. In Fig. 6 the spiral elements 2 of two rows of tubes 1 are hung from carriers 41 on a shaft 42 which is adapted to be oscillated by a detachable handle 46 or by power operated means. A cross-bar 47 hits against stops 48 to produce jolting of the elements 2.
