Abstract

774,207. Reinforcing tanks or beams. CROM, J. M. Aug. 4, 1954 [Aug. 14, 1953], No. 22579/54. Class 83 (4). [Also in Groups X and XXIX] A concrete tank or beam is wound with wire by means which lay the wire loosely around the article and one or more turns later take up the looselywound wire and return it to the article at a rate less than that at which it was taken up to form a tighttensioned wrapping around the article. A wire-wrapping vehicle 1 is supported through cables 25, and moved around a concrete tank 7, to be prestressed by winding with wire, by a carriage 2 running along the top of the tank, the vehicle 1 being lifted progressively by means engaging the ends of the cables 25. The carriage 2 is driven by a motor 26 and is tied back by cables 33 to a post at the.centre of the tank. Wire from a roll 4 carried by the vehicle 1 passes over pulleys 6, or a brake block or die, to be laid loosely on the tank 7 as the vehicle 1 moves therearound. The loose wrapping wire 8 is taken up a few turns later over a pulley 10 by a tapered take-up wheel 9, rotatable on shaft 18 on the vehicle 1, to pass around the wheel 9 several times, over a pulley 14, carried by a cable 20 from the carriage 2, several times around a tapered pay-out wheel 16, of smaller diameter than the wheel 9 but integral therewith, and over a pulley 17 back to the tank. Owing to the difference in diameters of the wheels 9, 16 the wire is taken up faster than it is paid out to stretch it and tension it tightly around the tank at 3. Wire accumulating between the wheels 9, 16 is taken up by movement of the pulley 14 upwards either by a motor-driven drum 21 on the carriage 2 or by weight on the cable 20. Instead of being tapered the wheels 9, 16 may have cam-actuated fingers to engage the wire thereon. The wheels 9, 16 may be geared together or may be arranged to slip relative to one another through the medium of an air sac, Fig. 5 (not shown), therebetween if the wire is over-tensioned. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, a vehicle 40 running on wheels 55 carrying the wire supply 42, take-up wheel 49 and pay-out wheel 53, is pulled round the tank by a wheel 46 on the vehicle 40, driven by a motor 47, around which wheel the temporary wrapping is looped. In a further embodiment, Figs. 9, 10, for winding wire round a concrete beam 58 a vehicle 64 carries the wire supply 71, take-up wheel 69 and pay-out wheel 70, connected to the wheel 69 through a one-toone reverse gearing 66, and is pulled around the beam by a driven wheel 74 (not shown), around which is looped the temporary wrapping. The vehicle runs on castors 61 and engages the beam by wheels 60, 80. The vehicle could be driven by driven supporting wheels instead of through engagement of the temporary wrapping by the wheel 74. In a further embodiment, Fig. 13, for winding a tapered pipe section 83. The section is rotated by shafts 84, 85 and takeup and pay-out wheels 88, 89 are mounted on a carriage transversed along the pipe section 83, the ratio of the diameter of the wheels 88, 89 being chosen to take into account the taper. Specification 725,042, [Group X], is referred to.
