Abstract

Fabrics consisting wholly or in part of cellulose esters, e.g cellulose acetate, or of vinyl compounds or polyethylene terephthalate are impregnated, before being embossed, with a softening liquid such as water, an aqueous solution of an alcohol, a dilute aqueous solution of a solvent, an ester or ether of a glycol, especially diethylene glycol acetate, benzene, toluene or a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon. To the softening liquid a resinous condensation product of formaldehyde with urea or a urea derivative or melamine may be added. A modified protein size or a size based on methyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol or the sodium and ammonium salts of styrene-maleic acid copolymers may also be added.
