Abstract
Ethylene is catalytically polymerized to form solid paraffin like polymers in the presence of an aluminium trialkyl of the general formula <FORM:0773536/IV(a)/1> wherein R1, R2, R3 represent similar or di similar alkyls, and in which the aluminium trialkyl is activated by nickel, cobalt, or platinum. The activator may be in the form of colloidal metal or as Raney nickel, nickel chloride or nickel acetyl acetonate or as a dispersion on a carrier such as granular aluminium. The activity of this metal may be maintained by adding to the feed, from 0.2 to 1.0 per cent of a compound with a triple bond such as acetylene, methylacetylene, hexyne, phenylacetylene, diacetylene or vinylacetylene. Oxygen, moisture and carbon dioxide should be excluded. The process may be effected at room temperature using a pressure of 100 atmospheres, but preferably a lower pressure at 50-70 DEG C. is utilized. Traces of nickel which sometimes go into solution in the product may be rendered inactive by the addition of anhydrous ferrous chloride or ferrous acetylacetonate. Specifications 713,081; 742,642 and 763,824, [both in Group IV (b)], are referred to.ALSO:Ethylene is catalytically polymerized to form butene, hexene or higher liquid polymers in the presence of an aluminium trialkyl of the general formula: <FORM:0773536/IV(b)/1> wherein R1, R2, R3 represent similar or dissimilar alkyls, and in which the aluminium trialkyl is activated by nickel, cobalt or platinum. The activator may be in the form of colloidal metal or as Raney nickel, nickel chloride or nickel acetyl acetonate or as a dispersion on a carrier such as granular aluminium. The activity of this metal may be maintained by adding to the feed from 0.2 to 1.0 per cent of a compound with a triple bond such as acetylene, methylacetylene, hexyne, phenylacetylene, diacetylene or vinylacetylene. Oxygen, moisture and carbon dioxide should be excluded. The process may be effected at room temperature using a pressure of 100 atmospheres, but preferably a lower pressure at 50-70 DEG C. is utilized. Traces of nickel which sometimes go into solution in the product may be rendered inactive by the addition of anhydrous ferrous chloride or ferrous acetylacetonate.
