Abstract
<PICT:0772890/IV(a)/1> In a continuous process for polymerizing ethylene at 70 DEG to 225 DEG C. and 500 to 30,000 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a non-polymerizable liquid diluent-modifier and a catalyst the temperature is controlled by injecting, independently of catalyst introduction, at spaced locations in the reaction zone at least a portion of the cooled diluent-modifier. The addition of diluent-modifier, which may be an alcohol, ketone, or an aliphatic or C6-C8 aromatic hydrocarbon free from aliphatic unsaturation, preferably benzene, is controlled thermostatically so as to maintain a constant reaction temperature and may be passed direct from storage,or as cooled recycle material stripped from the polymer. Catalysts mentioned are molecular oxygen, hydrogen, benzoyl, lauroyl, di-t-butyl, furyoyl, di-camphoryl, diethyl and dimethyl peroxides, t-butyl hydroperoxide, ammonium persulphate, sodium perborate, benzo, furo, camphor and acetoperacids, tetraethyl lead, hydrazine and semicarbazide hydrochloride and a ,a ,a -trimethylhydrazinium iodide, hexachloroethane and octachloropropane, chloramine-T and chloramine-B. In an example, ethylene is passed through compressors 2, 3, 4, 5 combined with a catalyst from storage 18, and passed in liquid phase to heated reactor A into which benzene is passed at spaced intervals 17a, 17b, 17c from a blend of fresh benzene from tank 9 and recycled benzene from separator E. The products, preferably at 20 per cent conversion, are depressurized at B, C, unreacted ethylene returned to the feed lines 25, 31, the polymer steam stripped at D, and the polymer withdrawn at 40, alone or together with wax added at 41. The product may be pelletized or the blend cast into blocks.
