Abstract
772,739. Electric correspondence control systems. BRITTAINS, Ltd. May 17, 1955 [May 17, 1954], No. 14454/54. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXVI] In a method of determining the thickness of a fibrous web a controlled discharge is caused to pass through the air spaces in the web and the voltage required to initiate such discharge is measured. The air spaces approximate in length to the thickness of the web so that measuring the D.C. or A.C. voltage required to produce ionization of the air in the air spaces indicates the thickness of the web. In Fig. 1 a continuously moving paper web W passes between and in contact with electrode rollers E1, E2 and a capacitor C charges through resistor R1 and discharges through current limiting resistor R2 and the air spaces or channels in the paper web W in contact with electrodes E1, E2. The ionization voltage across web W as measured on voltmeter V continuously indicates the thickness of web W at a known apparent density. The roller E2 is earthed and rotates about a fixed axis and roller E1 has an adjustable position and is connected to the negative side of the D.C. voltage applied to C/R1. The electrodes may be of semiconducting material, or may be constructed of metal with a continuous surface or a surface interrupted with insulating segments. A bridge circuit utilizing an instrument recording the thickness is described, Fig. 3 (not shown).
