Abstract
3,3,3-Trifluoropropenes of formula CF3CX=CH2 where X is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine, are prepared by fluorinating, under anhydrous conditions and in the absence of acid or Friedel-Crafts catalyst, a halogenopropene of formula CMZ2CX=CH2 where M is chlorine or bromine and Z is fluorine, chlorine or bromine. The fluorination may be carried out by reaction with antimony trifluoride, antimony trifluorodichloride, or antimony trifluorodibromide, at a temperature below 100 DEG C. In examples, 3,3,3-trifluoropropene is prepared from 3,3,3-trichloropropene and from 3-chloro-3,3-difluoropropene; 2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene is prepared from 2,3,3,3-tetrachloropropene and from 2,3-dichloro - 3,3 - difluoropropene; 2 - bromo - 3,3,3-trifluoropropene is prepared from 2-bromo-3,3,3 - trichloropropene, from 2,3 - dibromo-3,3 - dichlorpropene, and from 2 - bromo - 3-chloro-3,3-difluoropropene. The preparation of the 3,3,3-trichloropropene by dehydrochlorination of 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane is also described. The Provisional Specification also describes the preparation of 2-bromo-3,3,3-trichloropropene, 2,3 - dibromo - 3,3 - dichloropropene, 3 - chloro - 3,3 - difluoropropene, 2 - bromo - 3-chloro - 3,3 - difluoropropene, and 2,3 - dichloro - 3,3 - difluoropropene, starting materials used above, by dehydrochlorination reactions.
