Abstract

Organopolysiloxane oils, resins and liquids or gums convertible to the solid, elastic state, which have been made by polymerizing lower molecular weight siloxanes with alkali-metal compounds, are stabilized (against deterioration at elevated temperatures) by incorporating therein organophosphorus compounds, a long list of which is given. Alkali metal compounds specified are alkali metal (Na, K, Li, Rb, Cs) hydroxides, alkoxides, thioalkoxides, silanolates, complexes of aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene or anthracene; compounds of the formula (ROH)xMOH, where R is a hydrocarbon radical and M is an alkali metal, and alkali metal salts of organopolysiloxanes. The stabilized convertible siloxanes containing Sibonded hydrocarbon and/or halogenated hydrocarbon radicals and possibly some -Si-R-Si-groups, may be compounded in known manner with fillers, e.g. titania, silica aerogel, diatomaceous earth, fumed silica, g -alumina, calcium carbonate and polytetrafluorethylene particles and fibres, curing agents, benzoyl peroxide, t.-butylperbenzoate and 2,21-azobis-isobutyronitrile, compression set additives, and cured. In examples: (1,2) a methyl siloxane oil made by intercondensing octamethylcyclo-, and decamethyl-tetrasiloxanes in the presence of KOH was stabilized by adding triphenyl-phosphate or other organophosphorus compounds, and then stripped of low-boiling polymers; (3) a similarly made oil containing methyl and phenyl radicals was also stabilized by triphenyl phosphate; (4, 5, 6) alkali catalysed convertible siloxanes were stabilized by adding various organophosphorus compounds thereto and then compounded with fillers &c. in known manner. Compositions for coating heat-resistant cloths are made by dispersing the stabilized siloxanes together with fillers and curing agent in liquid media, e.g. benzene, xylene and toluene. The compositions find use as insulating materials for electrical conductors, gasket materials, shockabsorbers and in making heater ducts.
