[Also in Group XIX] An apparatus for indicating the extent of plastic deformation of a material under a given load comprises means for applying a load to a test length thereof, and an equal or proportional load to a comparison member which remains within its elastic limit under such a load, resistance strain gauges responsive to the strain in the test length and comparison member respectively connected in a bridge circuit which is adjustable to remain balanced only so long as the strain in the test length is proportional to load, and a bridge instrument which thus gives a reading proportional to any plastic deformation thereof. In Fig. 1 the comparison member 11 is a shackle through which load is applied to test length 13, its strain gauges E2, E3 being mounted directly thereon while the gauges E, E1 responsive to strain of the length 13 are mounted on the highly stressed strap 16 of an extensometer 15 fixed thereto. Alternatively, the comparison member is of modified construction with its gauges similarly mounted on an extensometer. The member may in this case form an integral extension of the test length with a cross-section sufficient to keep it within its elastic limit. The bridge circuit (Fig. 5) is initially balanced by varying resistor A and the shorting bar across resistors B is then adjusted to a position in which the bridge remains balanced for small changes in load. The bridge becomes unbalanced when the test length is plastically deformed, the meter being directly calibrated to show the extent thereof. A meter responsive to load is read when a meter reading corresponding to a predetermined percentage deformation occurs. The meter may be a mirror galvanometer and may actuate a photocell in response to a certain unbalance current or may be replaced by an electronic relay triggered by such a current to operate a buzzer and/or signal light.
