Abstract
771,642. Spring units with friction damping. BUCKEYE STEEL CASTINGS CO. July 7, 1955 [Oct. 19, 1954], No. 19646/55. Class 108(3). A spring and damping mechanism for a rail vehicle comprises load supporting springs 16 between a first member A from which extends a post P having a friction face 56, and a second member B having walls 23, 23, receiving the post P therebetween, and connected by a horizontally disposed plate 34, 38, having a central inclined surface 27 converging towards the friction face 56, the member B also having mutually spaced webs 32, 37, Fig. 7, each having an inclined surface thereon displaced from and parallel to the surface 27, a wedge w having a face 66 lying along and engaging the friction face 56, a sloping central surface 68 engaging the surface 27, and sloping surfaces 74, 76, at each side of the surface 68, and engaging a respective one of the surfaces of the webs 32, 37, a coil spring s disposed in an area lying between the webs 32, 37, the friction face 56, and the surface 27, urging the wedge w into engagement with the surfaces 56, and 27, and abutment means acting against the post preventing lateral shifting of the member A in response to the action of the wedge. In the construction shown, the abutment means comprises a second inclined surface 27 and associated wedge w, acting in conjunction with a second surface 56 on the opposite side of the post P. Each wedge w is formed with a hook portion 83 which is adapted to be engaged with a rod 84 inserted under web portions of the member B, so that the wedge w can be held in a position in which it compresses the spring s during assembly of the mechanism. The members A and B are formed with respective sets of hooks 86 and 87 which are adapted to be engaged with links, Figs. 17 and 18 (not shown) to maintain the mechanism in a compressed condition, after assembly, but before operation in position in a rail vehicle. A self-centring action is provided for the wedge w by making the side surfaces 74, 76 slightly convergent and by providing correspondingly divergent bearing surfaces 33, 45 on the webs 32, 37.
