Abstract

The invention comprises mono-ditetrazolesubstituted aromatic nitro-compounds having at least three nitro groups in each aromatic nucleus. The compounds may be prepared by the reaction of alkali, alkaline-earth or heavy metal salts of ditetrazole with aromatic nitrocompounds having at least three nitro groups and at least one other polar group which is readily labile as a consequence of said three nitro groups. The preferred ditetrazole salts are the sodium, barium and manganese salts. Examples of aromatic nitro compounds are picryl chloride and tetranitraniline. The reaction may be effected in a solvent such as acetone in admixture with water. The products are detonating explosives. In examples: (1) the disodium salt of ditetrazole is introduced into a solution of picryl chloride in acetone and 10 per cent water and the mixture refluxed to give dipicryl ditetrazole; (2) the disodium salt of ditetrazole is reacted with tetranitraniline in acetone at room temperature.
