Abstract

Liquid lubricants are prepared from unsaturated esters of saturated primary aliphatic alcohols having at least 3 carbon atoms and fumaric, maleic or homologous acids, by heating the diester, or mixtures, to 200 DEG to 280 DEG C. for 15 minutes to one hour to give a molecular weight of at most 2000, said heating being stopped as soon as the viscosity ceases to increase rapidly. An organic peroxide catalyst is preferably used, and the products may be purified by distillation at 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. under low pressure. Esters specified are octyl fumarate and maleate, butyl maleate and iso-amyl fumarate. The esters may be mixed with each other and with polymethacrylic ester, methylpolysiloxanes, silicones containing aromatic groups, mineral oils, 2-ethyl-hexyl silicate, iso-amyl and 2-ethyl-hexyl adipates and phosphates, butyl, triphenyl, iso-amyl, 2-ethyl-hexyl and o-cresyl phosphites, and organic phosphonates, and these products are suitable as lubricants for gas turbines and as working liquids in hydraulic transmissions, aircraft landing gear, gun recoil brakes and shock-absorbers.ALSO:Liquid lubricants are prepared from unsaturated esters of saturated primary aliphatic alcohols of at least 3 carbon atoms and fumaric, maleic or homologous acids, by heating the diester, or mixtures thereof, to 200 DEG to 280 DEG C. for 15 minutes to one hour to give a molecular weight of at most 2000, said heating being stopped as soon as the viscosity ceases to increase rapidly. An organic peroxide catalyst is preferably used, and the products may be purified by distillation at 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. under low pressure. Esters specified are octyl fumarate and maleate, butyl maleate and iso-amyl fumarate. In examples the temperatures of polymerization are 200 DEG , 270 DEG and 280 DEG C. and the molecular weights of the products range from 700 to 900.ALSO:Liquid lubricants are prepared from unsaturated esters of saturated primary aliphatic alcohols of at least 3 carbon atoms and fumaric, maleic, homologous acids, by heating the diester, or mixtures, to 200 DEG to 280 DEG C. for 15 minutes to one hour to give a molecular weight of at most 2000, said heating being stopped as soon as the viscosity ceases to increase rapidly. The polymerized esters may be mixed with each other and with polymethacrylic ester, methylpolysiloxanes, silicones containing aromatic groups, mineral oils, 2-ethylhexyl silicate, iso-amyl and 2-ethyl-hexyl adipates and phosphates; butyl, triphenyl, iso-amyl, 2-ethylhexyl and o-cresylphosphites, and organic phosphonates, and these products are suitable as lubricants for gas turbines.
