Abstract

770,699. Automatic tension control systems. SUCKER GES., GEB. Nov. 26, 1954 [Dec. 2, 1953], No. 34417/54. Class 38 (4). In order to maintain the tension in wet material constant during processing, the relative feed speed of feed-in and run-off rollers is adjusted by a variable speed gear coupled between the rolls and controlled electrically in accordance with the movements of a tensiondetecting jockey roll. The web material 2 passes between feed-in and run-off rollers 1, 7 respectively, and passes over a jockey roll 5 producing a desired order of tension by means of a spring 8 adjustable by manually-operated mechanism 44, 53. The roller 5 is connected through a flexible band 39 with a selsyn generator rotor 40 whose shaft carries a pointer 42 movable over a fixed scale 41. The generator stator 52 is also rotatable to a fixed position for setting a desired tension indicated by a second pointer on scale 41. The rollers 1, 7 are interconnected through linkage 19, 20, 21, 22 and an infinitely variable speed gear 23 whose ratio is adjustable by a threaded spindle 26 rotated through gearing 47 by a reversible servomotor 25. A selsyn motor 48, 43 linked to the selsyn generator 40, 52 in the usual manner has moving contacts 50, 51 mounted on its rotor 43, so that rotation of the latter as a result of a tension deviation signal from the generator causes one of these contacts to make with a fixed contact 49 on the selsyn motor stator 48. The motor 25 is thereby energized to rotate spindle 26 and thus adjust the speed ratio of gear 23 in the correct sense to restore the tension to the required value. The stator 48 is also rotated by motor 25 to give a "follow-up" or anti-hunting control. The Specification states that the selsyn systems may be replaced by D.C. bridge networks in which an out-of-balance condition in one circuit results in a corresponding condition in the other.
