Abstract

Benzene carboxylic acids are prepared from the corresponding benzene compounds with one to three alkyl side chains containing up to three carbon atoms in each side chain or the corresponding oxidation products thereof as fas as they are poorer in oxygen than the corresponding carboxylic acids by a treatment with an aqueous alkaline solution of a hypochlorite, which consists in working in the presence of an emulsifying agent. Benzene compounds specified are toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, diethylbenzene, triethylbenzene, phenyl ethyl alcohol, phenyl acetaldehyde, acetophenone, p-diacetylbenzene and p-diisopropylbenzene. Crude mixtures obtainable by the oxidation of such compounds by air may also be used. Emulsifying agents mentioned are sulphonates of long-chain paraffin hydrocarbons or alkylated naphthalenes. In effecting the oxidation, liquid benzene compounds are emulsified in hypochlorite solution, or in aqueous alkali such as the hydroxides or carbonates of sodium or potassium or calcium hydroxide when chlorine is led into the emulsion. Solid benzene compounds are dissolved in a solvent such as benzene or cyclohexane before emulsification. The emulsion is vigorously mixed during the oxidation by stirring or acoustic irradiation. In examples, acetophenone (1), or a benzene solution of p-diacetylbenzene (2), is oxidized with sodium hypochlorite in aqueous caustic soda in the presence of a paraffin sulphonate prepated by sulphochlorination of high molecular weight paraffin hydrocarbons of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis as emulsifier to yield benzoic acid or terephthalic acid respectively; (3) p-xylene, or (4) p-diisopropylbenzene, which has been subjected to a preliminary oxidation with air is emulsified in aqueous caustic soda in the presence of the emulsifier of Examples (1) and (2) and chlorine is then led in to give terephthalic acid.
