Abstract
770,499. Friction and wedge action draft gears. MINER, Inc., W. H. April 20, 1955 [June 11, 1954], No. 11420/55. Class 103(5). A draft gear comprises a section A having a shoulder 12a and a skirt 10 telescopically engaging the section B having a wall 11, end wall 16 and a flange 18 to engage stop lugs in the draft pocket. The section A houses friction shoes C and a wedge D which is held in position against the spring column E by rotating it after insertion so that lugs 15 on the wedge engage projections 14 on the friction wall 12 of the section A. A plurality of lugs 20, Fig. 5, provided on the section A to engage slots 21, Fig. 7, in the section B. When assembling the gear the section A is first telescoped into section B so that lugs 20 traverse slot branches 22 then the section A is rotated'so that the parts are held against axial separation. During normal buff or draft shocks the lugs 20 traverse slot branches 24 against the spring action only but under excess loads the shoulder 12a abuts the wall 11 and the friction gear becomes operative.
