Abstract

A composition curable to a rubber comprises (1) 95 to 70 per cent by weight of a rubbery diisocyanate modified linear polyester or polyesteramide, and (2) 5 to 30 per cent by weight of a crystalline linear polyester or diisocyanate modified crystalline linear polyester. The polyester and polyesteramides used for making the rubbery ingredient have a molecular weight of greater than 1000 and suitable polyesters are derived by reacting 1 :2-propylene, 1 :3-butylene, diethylene or triethylene glycol and succinic, glutaric, adipic, methyladipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic or sebacic acid; also by reacting ethylene, tetramethylene or hexamethylene glycol and an alkyl adipic acid; polyethylene glutarate, polyethylene adipate and polyethylene succinate adipate are also suitable. Suitable crystalline polyesters are derived by reacting tetramethylene hexamethylene or decamethylene glycol and succinic, adipic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic or terephthalic acid; polyethylene succinate and polyethylene sebacate are also suitable. The unmodified crystalline polyester or diisocyanate modified crystalline polyester used in the composition preferably has a molecular weight greater than 10,000. In making the rubbery diisocyanate modified polyester or polyesteramide or diisocyanate modified crystalline polyester, 1.0-1.2 mol. of diisocyanate are used per mol. of polyester or polyesteramide. Suitable diisocyanates are hexamethylene-, toluylene-, p- or m-phenylene-, chlorphenylene-, diphenyl-, 4,41-diphenylmethane- and naphthalene-diiscyananates. The composition may also contain curing agents and curing catalysts as described in Specifications 580,524 and 580,526, [both in Group IV], additional polyisocyanates, tertiary amines, organic or inorganic fillers or pigments (e.g. carbon black, iron oxides, clay, asbestos, blanc fixe or whiting) and plasticizers. In examples: (1) a mixture of hexamethylene diisocyanate modified polydiethylene adipate and hexamethylene diisocyanate modified polyethylene sebacate is cured to a rubber by heating with naphthalene-1 :5-diisocyanate and triethylamine; (2) a mixture of naphthylene1 :5-diisocyanate modified polyethylene adipate and unmodified polyethylene sebacate is cured to a rubber by heating with napthylene1 :5-diisocyanate.
