770,127. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. LEVIN, S. May 16, 1955, No. 14087/55. Class 40 (2). Apparatus for magnetically recording and reproducing signals comprises a recording and pick-up element which is subjected to means for producing variations of its magnetic properties in predetermined regions thereof in accordance with signals to be recorded, and subjecting a magnetic recording medium to said element whereby variations of flux in said element caused by the variation of the magnetic properties induce magnetization accordingly in the record medium. The apparatus is of particular interest for recording a wide band of information and is described with reference to the recording and reproduction of video signals. Figs. 1 and 2 show a magnetic recording element 16 in the shape of a toroid, the portion 18 of which forms the target end of a cathoderay tube. In one mode of operation with the switch 14 in position B, video signals from input stage 29 are fed to the cathode gun 24, 25, 26 and an electron beam focused and subjected to deflection voltages by known means causes local variations in magnetic characteristics of portion 18 of element 16, and causes regional variations of fringing flux produced in a winding 19 by a direct current from a source 31, and thereby induces local magnetic variations in record medium 21. In another mode of operation, with switch 14 in position A, the image signal modulation is applied to winding 19 and a constant high frequency applied to cathode 26. Another embodiment is described with reference to Fig. 7, in which a direct image from a scene or object 45 or a cathoderay tube 46 is thrown upon a cathode 39 from which electrons are focused on to an electrode 38 whereby magnetic changes are produced in element 36 as described in the first embodiment.
