770,071. Tobacco smoke filters. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 8, 1956 [Feb. 9, 1955], No. 3824/55. Class 130 A tobacco smoke filter plug comprises a mass of interlaced' thermo-plastic fibres, the bulk of which are smaller than 10 microns in diameter, which are heated so that the fibres are lightly bonded together to form a coherent mass without destroying their fibrous nature. Granules of thermo-plastic material, e.g. polythene or polystyrene, are placed in an extrusion machine 3 heated by heaters 4 and when melted are forced through a fine gauze diaphragm 5 and extruded through fine orifices in jet tubes 7 into a stream of heated air or steam passing through annular orifices 8 around the tubes 7, whereby the molten plastic is formed into fine filaments, the bulk of which have diameters substantially smaller than 10 microns. The filaments are caught on a doffer 10 and removed by a comb 11 as a lap of fibrous material which is formed by rolls 13 into a sliver and passed through a heated tube 14 in which the fibres are lightly bonded together, the resulting rod being removed by a reciprocating conveyer 17 and cut by a knife 18 into plugs for use in cigarettes, cigarette holders or tobacco pipes.
