Abstract

768,791. Steering vehicles by braking. GALLAY, R. and STERN, C. April 20, 1955 No. 11429/55. Class 79(2). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a fluid friction brake for motor vehicles in which a gear wheel pump 1 in a fluid pressure circuit is fitted to each of the vehicle wheels such that the vehicle wheel is connected with the driving pinion 6 of the pump ; the housing 5 of the pump being connected to a non-rotary part of the vehicle frame, a valve 13, controlled by a brake lever, may be inserted in the pressure pipe 10 of the pump so as to throttle the output of the pump and thereby brake the wheel. As the wheel rotates oil is circulated from reservoir 8, via suction pipes 9 into the gear wheel chamber, via aperture 15 in valve 13 operating in pressure pipe 10 and back to the reservoir 8. Braking is effected by operation of a hydraulic master cylinder system such that pressure exerted upon the valve 13 to move same in the direction of the arrow F3 against the pressure of spring 14 closes or partially closes the bore of the pressure pipe 10 to cause a certain resistance to the rotation of the intermeshing pinions 6, 7 to produce a braking action upon the wheel. The oil in reservoir 8 may be cooled by the provision of cooling ribs 8a or other means. In order to provide differential braking action on the wheels of the motor vehicle dependent on the load supported by each wheel, each gear wheel pump unit 1 is secured to leaf spring 17 by tie member 21 and wheel axle 20 of the vehicle is coupled to pinion 6 of the pump unit. Link-work 22, 23, 26, connects a piston 27 with the chassis-beam 36 such that the compression of the spring 14 may be adjusted to vary the amount by which the valve 13 may be moved by the hydraulic pressure supplied from the master cylinder circuit to vary the amount by which the aperture 15 restricts the pressure pipe 10 in order to vary the braking effect on each wheel according to the load supported by that wheel. It is stated that control of the valves of the gear wheel pumps could be effected by any fluid pressure means ; such as compressed air, or by a mechanical or electrical device.
