In order to allow for the effect of increased axle loading of the front wheels of a vehicle when severe braking conditions exist; the hydraulic braking intensity to the rear wheel brakes may be reduced to prevent locking of the rear wheels by inserting in the brake conduit to the rear wheel brakes a regulating valve for regulating the rear wheel brake pressure via a spring-loaded piston, the regulating valve having a part thereof bearing on the piston-rod and a compression spring being located between the piston-rod and the part which bears on the piston-rod. Fig. 1 shows one embodiment where the regulating valve consists of a housing 1 in which a piston 2, under the influence of pressure means, actuates a spring- loaded valve 4 via a piston-rod 3. Up to a pressure determined by the springs 7 and 9 the pressure prevailing in the brake conduit is transferred unaltered to the rear wheel brakes cylinders via bore 5, chamber 13, pipe 12, through open valve 4 into chamber 14 and bore 6. When the pressure in the brake conduit increases to a value exceeding the pressure exerted by the springs 7, 9 the piston 2 and the valve 4 are displaced to the right. The pressure transfer from chamber 13 to chamber 14 is thus throttled by the displacement of the valve 4. Fig. 2 illustrates an alternative construction wherein the external pipe 12 is eliminated; pressure from the master cylinder being supplied via bore 18 into chamber 26 and via open spring-loaded valve 17 slidable on piston-rod 21 into chamber 27 and via bore 19 to the rear wheel brake cylinders. In this case the tension spring 15, acting on the piston 16, may be adjusted by screw 25.
