Abstract

Surgical dressings contain, as a deodorant, chlorophyll or chlorophyll derivatives in finely divided form. A solution or suspension of chlorophyll and/or its derivatives in water or organic solvents, e.g. ether or alcohol with or without an emulsifier, is applied to the dressing by spraying, the concentration of chlorophyll in the liquid being 0.0001 per cent to 2 per cent. Alternatively the chlorophyll may be added to cellulose pulp which is sprayed on the dressing or layers of the dressing material. Finely-powdered chlorophyll may be mixed with powdery carriers, e.g. kaolinkieselghur &c. and dusted on the dressing or between layers of cellulose wadding forming the dressing. Chlorophyll may be added to the dressing material, e.g. cellulose wadding, during its manufacture.
