Abstract
768,420. Mounting gearboxes. DAIMLERBENZ. AKT.-GES. April 15, 1955 [April 15, 1954], No. 10978/55. Class 79(3). [Also in Group XXXII] Relates to a wheel suspension arrangement comprising pendulous half axles which are connected by hinge joints to an axle carrier mounted resiliently on the superstructure or frame of the vehicle and are abutted against the superstructure in the direction of travel by thrust links, preferably articulated to the half axles below the axle centres. According to the invention, the axle carrier is constructed as a substantially vertical supporting member the upper end of which is mounted, above the axle centres, with resilience in all directions and which is abutted relatively softly against lateral swinging about that end, whilst its lower, laterally yieldable part carries the half axles preferably on a common joint axis, below the axle centres, one of the half axles preferably having an axle gear connected to it. As shown, half axles 12, 13 are abutted against a frame 9 by thrust links 14, 15 of U-section, which are pivoted to the frame by rubber cushions and are connected with the half axles through rubber sleeves 18. The links are sprung by coil springs 19. The half axles are pivoted on a common axis 20 to an axle carrier 21, in the form of a pin, which is supported at its upper end by a rubber cushion 22 and towards its lower end by a rubber ring 29, the arrangement being such that the pin is free to rock about the upper joint constituted by the cushion 22. The latter is provided with holes or cavities 28. The rubber members 22 and 29 are pre-stressed by a securing nut 26. The carrier 21 also provides a bearing 33 for a pivot pin 34 for the half axles 12, 13. An adjustable thrust member 40 is connected between a projection 38 of the bearing 33 and the frame 9, the connection to the projection 38 being made through a rubber joint 39<SP>1</SP> and that to the frame being made through a pair of pre-compressed rubber cushions 42, 43. The carrier 21 and or the joint 22 may alternatively be provided behind the half axles instead of in front of them as shown. The carrier may be arranged to swing freely in the longitudinal direction while being resiliently supported in the transverse direction, in which case the thrust member 40 may be dispensed with. The connection of the half axles to the carrier may be resilient in all directions and the carrier may be supported in one vertical direction only by the cushion 22 and in the opposite direction by the ring 29.
