Abstract

A thermosetting resin may be made by partially condensing formaldehyde with melamine, dicyandiamide, urea, thiourea or aniline, e.g. in a molar ratio between 3:1 and 6:1, in the presence or absence of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, ethylene glycol or 1:4-dioxane, until a clear homogeneous liquid is obtained and then reacting the partial condensate with a silane derivative, which is a silane containing at least one hydrolysable radical or is the product of reaction, in the presence or absence of a solvent, of a silane containing at least one silicon-bonded halogen atom with another silane having at least one ethoxy group in the proportion, e.g., of from 1:4 to 4:1. The final product is a clear, nontacky solid and may be disintegrated, mixed with metal salt catalysts, e.g. naphthenates, and fillers, e.g. diatomaceous earth and silica in amount of 65 parts by weight to 35 parts of resin, and moulded. In examples: (1) the reaction product of methyltriethoxy-silane and diphenyldichlorosilane in butyl alcohol was co-condensed with the partial condensate of melamine, formalin and butyl alcohol; (2) the partial condensate of (1) was replaced by a partial condensate of formaldehyde with dicyandiamide, urea, thiourea or aniline; (3) the siloxane of (1) was replaced by a siloxane made by reacting tetraethoxysilane, dimethyl-diethoxysilane, trimethylethoxysilane, ethyltriethoxysilane or amyltriethoxysilane with silicon tetrachloride, dimethyldichlorosilane, trimethylchlorosilane, ethyltrichlorosilane, diethyldichlorosilane or phenyltrichlorosilane; (4) the solvent used in (1) was replaced by n-propanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol or 1:4-dioxane.
