Abstract

Phosphorus- and sulphur-containing organic compounds are obtained by reacting a phosphine with a sultone, the reaction being carried out in the presence of an acid combining agent, e.g. anhydrous sodium carbonate, when the phosphine is a primary or secondary phosphine. Specified sultones (cyclic anhydrides of organic hydroxy sulphonic acids preferably with 5 or 6 ring atoms) are propanesultone, butanesultone, isobutanesultone, tolylsultone and 1,8-naphthsultone. The phosphines are defined as those having the general formula R.PH2, (R)2PH, and (R)3P, in which R is an organic residue attached to the phosphorus atom by means of a carbon atom and which in the case of the secondary and tertiary phosphines may be the same or different residue. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an inert organic solvent or diluent. In the case of the primary and secondary phosphines the products are phosphorus-containing sulphonic acids, e.g. from propane sultone and a phosphine (R)(R1).PH the product is (R)(R1).P.CH2.CH2.CH2. SO3H, whilst in the case of the tertiary phosphines the products are probably internal phosphonium salts. Specified phosphines are mono-, di- or tri-alkyl phosphines, mixed di- and tri-alkylarylphosphines, arylphosphines, and cycloalkylphosphines. Examples are given for the reaction of triphenylphosphine with propanesultone to form a crystalline product, the reaction being carried out by heating at 70-170 DEG C. in the absence of a solvent or by refluxing the reactants in xylene solution.
